some background…

My name is Shawnee Badger and I’m a young, millennial woman running to represent AD 38 as a delegate to the California Democratic Party. In addition to being a card-holding SAG-AFTRA union actress, internationally published model, internet influencer, and performer at Disneyland, I’m also an animal rights, environmental justice, human rights and social justice activist, and dedicated community member living in Santa Clarita, CA. I moved to the Santa Clarita Valley when I was 2 years old and have lived here and grown up here ever since. I went to Castaic Elementary School, Castaic Middle School, and then Valencia High School. While attending Valencia High School, I was an AP/Honors student. I graduated with 5 honors (NHS, NAHS, CSF, Key Club, HSS Career Path), won the CSEA Chap. 349 Scholarship, was on the honor roll 5 times, won the science valor award, art excellence award, and outstanding officer award to the Key Club, where I served as the Public Relations officer. I was also on the debate team and dance team; but, of all my high school accomplishments, my greatest one and what I see as my legacy I left behind, was, after my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer, I founded and served as the first President to the Valencia High School Breast Cancer Awareness Club.

After graduating Valencia High School, I attended College of the Canyons, where I was in the honors program, made the honor roll 2 times, was the Secretary of the Honors Club, ICC Representative of Alpha Gamma Sigma, and the treasurer of Phi Theta Kappa. I graduated College of the Canyons with an Associates Degree Cum Laude in English. While attending college, I also attended and graduated from the Santa Clarita School of Dental Assisting, where I earned my Dental Assistant Certification, CPR Certification, and California Radiology License.

After receiving admission to UCLA, UC-San Diego, UC-Santa Barbara, and UC-Irvine, I chose a different path for myself: arts and entertainment.

my political origin story…

While pursuing my passion, I began to get engaged in politics and political activism. I had a radical start in politics. After volunteering for Senator Bernie Sanders 2016 Presidential campaign, I ran and won the most votes and served as the youngest, top vote-getting female delegate to the Democratic National Convention for Bernie Sanders from California's 25th Congressional District.

After the 2016 Democratic National Convention and after rediscovering my path in party politics, I became very involved and deeply emotionally invested in the NO DAPL movement. I protested and marched locally. At one of these local actions, an indigenous brother called on my spirit to go to North Dakota and stand respectfully in solidarity with water protectors peacefully fighting and resisting this injustice against the First People and our planet. Upon returning, I went to divestment actions and encouraged and promoted individuals to divest their personal funds from DAPL.

These were two experiences that really solidified my passion and need to be involved in political action and activism.

More recently, I co-founded and now lead Our Revolution Santa Clarita Valley. Some months thereafter, I co-founded and now help lead Democratic Socialists of America Santa Clarita Valley. Our Revolution SCV and DSA SCV now currently coordinate together on events and actions to make our community a better home to all. We have spearheaded many campaigns and actions including bringing Community Choice Energy to Santa Clarita, ending the criminalization of street vendors, stopping the criminalization of homelessness, advocating for our unhoused communities and support for and expansion of Bridge to Home, standing with students against gun violence at the March for Our Lives, taking part in and organizing actions against Steve Knight and advocating for his ousting, and standing with our undocumented and immigrant neighbors in support of SB 54. We have also endorsed many candidates for office, legislation, and ballot measures; and even co-organized an event with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. I am also on the Our Revolution Texting Team.

I have been a delegate to the California Democratic Party for over a year now, by way of serving as an Alternate to Lynne Plambeck to the Los Angeles County Democratic Party. I have been very active in local politics and the local political scene. While volunteering for Bernie Sanders 2016 campaign, I also volunteered for Lou Vince for Congress. This last election season, I was, for a period of time, a Political Director and volunteer for Jess Phoenix for Congress and the Campaign Manager for a Santa Clarita City Council campaign. I also volunteered for Ankur Patel for State Assembly, Christy Smith for State Assembly, and Katie Hill for Congress. I am a member of Santa Clarita Valley Young Democrats (for a period of time, I was the treasurer), North Valley Democratic Club, Democratic Alliance for Action, and WIN to Lead. I am also a member of the local and national Sierra Clubs, 25 United for Progress, Americans for Democratic Action, and Progressive Democrats of America. I’ve been a dues paying Democratic Socialists of America member since joining at the People’s Summit in June of 2017. I am also a board member of SCOPE, an amazing local environmental organization. Within the California Democratic Party, I am a member of the Environmental Caucus and the Progressive Caucus, though I attend as many of the caucus’ as I can.

if only slaughterhouses were made of glass…

I have been vegan for almost 3 years. I currently volunteer as a vegan mentor with both PETA and Vegan Outreach. I recently volunteered and worked to pass Prop 12, the Prevent Cruelty California ballot initiative that passed overwhelmingly across the state and will give a somewhat more humane existence to the sentient beings bred for slaughter in factory farms. This year, you could also find me frequently protesting outside of Farmer John’s slaughterhouse in South LA.

While serving as an Alternate to the Los Angeles County Democratic Party and a Delegate to the California Democratic Party, I passed a resolution titled, “Animal Agriculture and Our Environment,” which pushes for plant-based living and education, both due to animal agriculture’s major contribution to climate change and to work towards ending the cruelty to and exploitation of animals. My resolution passed through both the Los Angeles County Democratic Party and the California Democratic Party unanimously, with no opposition whatsoever. It is the first resolution dealing with these subjects to pass through a major county and/or state party in the country. The passing of my resolution led to my amending of our California Democratic Party Platform, which now includes language I authored, calling for the education and promotion of plant-based living due to animal agriculture's detrimental effects on our planet. This is also the first platform of a major political party to include this kind of language in the country. These accomplishments set a precedent and led to Assemblymember Ash Kalra passing ACR 279 through the California State Legislature.

This passionate activism in the world of environmental justice, animal rights, and veganism led me to start the process of founding the non-profit Political Action Committee, Vegan Action Fund. I also sit on the board of another historic PAC, AnimalPAC.

My partner, Ankur Patel, who ran for Assembly in the 45th district, is a UTLA member and substitute teacher. Together, he and I have marched with the LAUSD teachers and passed a resolution calling for better wages and the unionization of Disneyland Cast Members, which passed through the California Democratic Party.

I hope that this in depth bio really gives you a good sense of me, who I am, what I value, and what I want to continue to work on while being a California Democratic Party Assembly District Delegate.
